Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a private meeting during the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.
As the neighboring country's media reports, Mitsotakis and Rama have discussed the issue of Fredi Beleri. The Greek Prime Minister underlined the need for an immediate solution to the issue, stressing that in Albania "there is an issue of the rule of law".
The elected mayor of Himara, Beleri, has been behind bars for more than 50 days, accused of corruption in the May 14 local elections. He was caught red-handed giving 80,000 new lek for the purchase of 4 votes.
The Greek authorities have accused the Albanian government of arresting him, stating that they will raise the matter in the highest institutions of the EU, as well as hindering the country's integration.
However, Albania has responded by stating that Beler's case belongs to the new Albanian justice institutions, and is treated the same as any other citizen, without political interference.
