Sali Berisha proposes compulsory voting in Albania

Due to clashes between police and protesters at yesterday's Democratic Party protest, a proposal by opposition leader Sali Berisha went unnoticed.

According to Berisha, the Albanian Parliament should consider and adopt a law on compulsory voting for Albanian citizens.

In his speech during the protest, Berisha also focused on the elections in Hungary, presenting them as an example of high voter turnout. According to him, the Albanian Parliament should consider and adopt a law on compulsory voting.

"A lesson that we Albanians can learn from the elections in Hungary is the massive participation in the elections, over 80% of Hungarian citizens. This is the reason why I have insisted on the law on compulsory voting, a law that a number of democratic countries have, because only a compulsory participation in the elections in Albania could free citizens from fear and have the results we need," said Berisha.

"But in Albania such participation is prohibited by threats," the democratic leader added, while accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Socialist Party of pressuring voters.
