A memorial ceremony was held today in front of the Tirana Municipality on the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the launch of the attacks on Ukraine, where many people lost their lives. The event was attended by the Delegated Mayor of Tirana, Anuela Ristani, the Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Albania, Volodymyr Shkurov.
In her speech, the Mayor-elect of Tirana, Anuela Ristani, emphasized the emotional and symbolic dimension of this anniversary. “It is almost unbelievable that we are doing this for the fourth year in a row and it is at the same time as touching as it was in the first year. It is one of those moments where we come together, but at the same time, we all wish we would not come together again for this reason,” declared Ristani. She underlined that, despite global challenges and general fatigue, Tirana remains steadfast in its stance. "In this time of real fatigue and discouragement, amidst the attention scattered in many global and local crises, we still want to emphasize that Tirana stands with Ukraine, as it has stood since day one. Not only Tirana, but all those who support justice, freedom and human dignity. Tirana is still here, Albania stands here for all those who in any way we can help and in any way we can support. Even if the noise gets louder, we will shout even louder for justice, to shout for what is right and what we owe to the Ukrainian people. Thank you all for coming, it is truly beautiful and touching to have you here, as you were here from day one," concluded Ristani.
For his part, the Ambassador of the EU Delegation, Silvio Gonzato, reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to a just and lasting peace. "Peace and integrity are essential commitments for the security of all states. If aggression is normalized, territorial integrity becomes negotiable. A lasting peace in Ukraine is critical. Accountability for the suffering must also be important. The European Union will continue to support efforts to guarantee accountability, as well as diplomatic pressure, until peace is secure. The Ukrainian people are showing heroic resistance. Ukrainians deserve our full support. We thank Albania for its support, it is important that in these times EU countries and those on the path of integration show unity in action and purpose. It is time for us not to hesitate in promoting our common rules", concluded Gonzato.
Ukrainian Ambassador Volodymyr Shkurov recalled that on February 24, four years ago, the world was faced with a shocking reality: “Today marks four years since the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine. Four years ago, on the morning of February 24, the world woke up to a terrible reality that many believed was forever left in the past,” Shkurov declared. He emphasized that Ukraine did not choose war, but resistance. “Russia launched a war of aggression aimed at the destruction of a sovereign state and the silencing of a free nation. This war was not Ukraine’s choice. Ukraine did not choose war, but chose resistance. For four years, my people have been defending the fundamental right to life. We are defending not only our land and homes, but also the principles on which European and Euro-Atlantic security is built: sovereignty, freedom and the right of nations to determine their own future,” Shkurov concluded.
