DP embraces protesters' demands, Bardhi: We will demand the repeal of the law on strategic investments

The Democratic Party is trying to translate into parliamentary initiatives some of the demands of the protesters who have been protesting in front of the Prime Minister's Office for a week.

 Gazment Bardhi announced that the DP will demand the repeal of the law on strategic investments, as well as changes to the law on protected areas and the mountain package. The opposition argues that these acts have favored private interests to the detriment of the public interest, while emphasizing that the main demand remains the resignation of the government.

The protests, which began a week ago in front of the government building, have maintained a clear distance from the major political groups in the country.

But the Democratic Party clearly wants to seize this moment, when the government is directly facing the protesters. And to reinforce this confrontation of the majority with the demonstrations, it has decided to send some of the demands articulated on the boulevard to parliament.

The head of the DP Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, said on Sunday that they are demanding the repeal of the Law on Strategic Investments, which has been postponed 6 times so far, and which is the second demand of the protesters after the government's resignation.

"Our first package for the implementation of these conditions begins with the law that symbolizes more than any other law the model of favoritism, the lack of competition and the disappearance of public interest: the repeal of the law on strategic investments," Bardhi writes.

In his statement, Bardhi writes that the DP is now also demanding the repeal of the 2024 amendments to the law on protected areas, also a demand of the protesters.

"Edi Rama changed the law on protected areas two years ago. The Democratic Party voted against it, because we knew that the goal was not to protect nature, but to pave the way for its concreting," says Bardhi.

The mountains package, which has caused widespread public debate and has been opposed by the Democratic Party, will also be requested to be repealed along with the amendments to the cultural heritage law.

On May 26, the Democratic Party announced that it would present 3 legal initiatives to the Assembly that aimed to address, according to it, the conditions that the EU has set for the repeal of the law on strategic investments, the complete decriminalization of defamation against journalists, and the criminalization of money laundering as a separate criminal offense in the Criminal Code.

The last two initiatives were not mentioned by Bardhi today. They seem to have now been replaced by the protesters' demands.
