Protests, Minister Blendi Gonxhe: A situation that requires attention, analysis and deep reflection

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, has reacted to the protests that have been taking place for seven days against the planned project in the Zvërnec area.

In a statement to the media from Pogradec, he stated that the situation requires attention, analysis and deep reflection from all parties.

The protests, which have gathered citizens, activists and young people every day on the "Martyrs of the Nation" boulevard in Tirana, center on opposition to planned developments in the Zvërnec protected area and the demand for a review of the project.

Gonxha said that the government is closely following developments and has not rushed to provide immediate reactions, with the aim of having a balanced and reasoned stance on the concerns raised.

"We live in Tirana and we are very clear that it is a situation that requires attention, analysis and deep reflection. We want to have the most well-thought-out and balanced approach in relation to their requests," the minister declared.

He stressed that the main cause of the protest is related to environmental issues, while adding that as a minister he has responsibility for aspects related to tourism development. According to him, analyses and verifications are being carried out on the importance of tourism projects in Zvërnec, as well as on similar development models in Albania and the region.

The minister stated that the protest should be respected and that it is an indicator of the functioning of democracy and freedom of expression in the country.

"We respect the protest. It also comes because freedom in the country is at a very high level. We must preserve this strength of democracy and listen to the serious and essential part of the concerns that are raised," said Gonxha.

He also appreciated the fact that public debate is focusing on environmental and biodiversity protection, considering this as a sign of social progress.

"The fact that today we are discussing flamingos, protected species and environmental sensitivity shows that society has made progress. For issues that are essential and of public interest, we are taking measures to be prepared and to respond to any issues raised," he said.

The minister's statements come at a time when opposition to the project in Zvërnec continues to intensify, while the organizers of the protest have warned of the continuation of civic mobilization in defense of the protected area of ??Narta and its lagoon.
