"Get up from the coffee"/ Rama defends Ylli Limani and accuses protesters: They are creating a climate of violence and intimidation

Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted harshly to the attacks and calls for a boycott that, according to him, have been directed at singer Ylli Limani, after his latest concert, linking them to the climate that has been accompanying the protest that has been taking place for days on the boulevard against the tourist project in Zvërnec.

Through a long post on Facebook, Rama stated that he does not personally know the artist nor does he listen to his music, but he describes the online violence against him, calls for a boycott and threats following the success of the concert as the "most disgusting expression" of a phenomenon that, according to him, is increasingly appearing around the protest.

According to the Prime Minister, the protest is being accompanied by a new form of public pressure and group intimidation, which should not be justified, relativized, or passed over in silence.

Rama argues that what he calls "the international social media hysteria" is gradually fading, which according to him has nothing to do with Albania, Zvërnec, or the flamingos of Narta, but is fueled by global ideological clashes, especially opposition to US President Donald Trump.

He cites as examples public calls for citizens to leave their daily activities to join the protest, requests for roadblocks, and attacks on social media against people who do not support the movement.

In his reaction, Rama makes a direct comparison with the way in which, according to him, intolerant and extremist movements have historically arisen.

The prime minister cites as examples Benito Mussolini's fascist squads in Italy, Nazi militants in Germany and the Greek extremist movement Golden Dawn, saying that all used social pressure, intimidation and stigmatization of opponents before gaining political influence.

Rama emphasizes that he is not labeling the protesters as neo-fascists, but warns that the practices of verbal violence and collective pressure have similarities to patterns that history has known before.

According to him, most Albanians are not part of the protest and should not face attacks because of their choices.

Rama's reaction:

I don't know Ylli Limani.

I don't listen to his music. But I consider the online violence against him, the violent calls to boycott his concert, the threats after his success last night, as the most despicable expression of a phenomenon that is accompanying the boulevard protest; a form of degradation of public life on social channels now elevated to a new level of group violence, which should not be justified, should not be relativized and should not be accepted by hiding in the corner of silence, but should be fought with the power of the word.

The fact is that the international hysteria on social networks is gradually subsiding, which has nothing to do with the nature of Albania, with Zvërnec or with the flamingos of Narta, but is fed by ideological contradictions of this kind, where undoubtedly the opposition to the American President is the main one - otherwise I highly doubt that a single international would deal with a tourism development project in Albania. And there is no way it will be otherwise, it will gradually subside, because Albania is a very small square for the global anti-Trump movement!

But on the other hand, a wave of verbal violence is rising every day, full of pressure, vulgarity and threats against anyone who does not align with the boulevard protesters, from calls in the streets to "get up from the coffee" because the homeland is calling you, to calls to block the streets because whoever wants to do other work should be forced to deal with the patriotic work of the boulevard, to an intimidating online hysteria in the name of the homeland that has nothing to do with the elegance and peace of the flamingos!

History has shown us more than once and more often than not, that this is precisely the form in which many movements have historically emerged which have subsequently transformed into organized examples of political and social intolerance. Not by convincing with logical arguments, but by imposing themselves with pseudo-moral pressure. Not by respecting the right of others to think differently, but by declaring anyone who does not submit to the pseudo-patriotic call a traitor, a sellout, an enemy of the people or an accomplice to evil.

With the auto-suggestion that only one group of people possesses the absolute truth, contempt for the majority who do not join them is nurtured and the evil idea is supported, that those who do not protest should be shamed, isolated, hindered or even, at the very least, physically abused until they are forced to choose sides. And so democracy no longer breathes, it is beginning to lose its pulse.

No extremist movement begins by seizing power by force, but by claiming that only it represents the nation, only it hears the voice of the people, and only it has the moral right to decide on behalf of the people who is patriotic and who is not.

In Italy, Mussolini's black squads appeared intimidating opponents in the streets before taking over the institutions - anyone walking to work was their favorite target. In Germany, Nazi militants created a climate of fear and social pressure in the streets long before they gained power - get up from the coffee was their favorite cry. In Greece, Golden Dawn rose on the same exclusionary, aggressive and nationalist spirit, feeding division, hatred and pressure on anyone who did not submit to its pseudo-patriotic bestiality, for a Greece that should belong only to the Greeks!

"We are the true people" and whoever is not with us is "the enemy of the people", is the formula that precedes serious political and social consequences when this formula is embraced by a group of people with a limited vocabulary, but with a sacred grudge. 

And this is not at all a question of anyone protesting today being hastily labeled as neo-fascist, absolutely not, because many of the perpetrators of online violence do not even know what they are doing! But the point is that whoever violates online those who do not align themselves with the protest, which is indisputably the majority of the Albanian people (even beyond the majority that supports the Socialist Party government), not only does it not make Albania better, it is striking right where Albania has its strongest point, its organic rejection of the national-socialist or neo-communist spirit, from which Albanians have seen the black pepper and which have also united on the boulevard the political extremes of pretended Albanianness, from the scoundrels to the idiots, without forgetting the tired coup-states of 1998 or those who came from other Albanian regions to protect Albania from the development of tourism!

Therefore, the discussion is not at all about whether someone protests or not. Protest is a democratic right and must always be respected; the ruling majority of the Socialist Party considers respect for protest one of the many democratic achievements of this period. But also the right to speech is more important than the content of the words and when the protest casts its shadow, the claim that those who do not protest are less of a citizen, less of a patriot or less of an Albanian, then democracy is not endangered from above but from below.

And history has taught us more than once that when dialogue is replaced by anathema, argument by insults, and persuasion by intimidation, and when the crowd takes advantage by giving itself the right to decide who has the right to speak and who does not, the outcome is never freedom but its end. In this spirit, Albania only loses, the economy only shrinks, investments only leave, and the future only becomes cloudy.

But this people has not come this far to go back to where they were, but to climb higher. Without fear of heights they have never been to, but with the conviction that what has prevented them from reaching there for centuries will no longer prevent them, and with the determination to make it to the end this time, even if all the devils come together to do it as they have done more than once in their painful history.
