Berisha announces visit to the US "to meet friends" and explains why he will not participate in the citizens' protest

The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has declared that the protests that have been taking place for 13 days in Tirana have a civic character and go beyond party divisions, despite calls against him during the rallies.

During a conversation with citizens, Berisha said that the various slogans heard in the protest should not, according to him, diminish the main goal of the movement.

"That protest is beyond political parties. Naturally there will be slogans that one side will like and another side will not, but they should not obscure the great mission of this protest ," he said.

Berisha argued that he did not physically participate in the protest precisely to preserve its civic nature.

According to him, he has asked members and leaders of the Democratic Party to participate only as citizens and not as political representatives.

"My presence there would damage the most powerful fiber of the protest, the civic fiber," declared the leader of the Democratic Party.

While praising the mobilization of young people, Berisha said that current developments should lead to the creation of a caretaker government that, according to him, would guarantee free and fair elections.

He added that the opposition is closely following the situation and is prepared for any possible political development.

Asked about the issue of lifting the travel restrictions in the US, Berisha said that he plans to visit the United States at an appropriate time.

"I'm going to the US to meet friends ," he said.

The statements come at a time when protests initially linked to the Zvërnec issue have taken on a broader political and social dimension, while the debate over the role of political parties in these rallies continues to remain present.
