European Commission: Gender Equality Law, not a personal agenda, we welcome its

Shortly before the plenary session began yesterday in Parliament, DP leader Sali Berisha also spoke about the sexual orientation of Silvio Gonzato, head of the EU delegation in Tirana.

A European Commission spokeswoman told Top Channel:

"Approximation with the EU acquis is part of the accession process, which all candidate countries are obliged to ensure.

"This has nothing to do with personal or political agendas, it is an essential step towards membership in the European Union."

As Commissioner Kos recalled in her post on social media yesterday:

“Gender equality and non-discrimination are an integral part of EU law. These are core EU values and fundamental rights. We welcome the adoption of the Gender Equality Law by the Albanian Parliament last night.”

This development follows the recommendation in the Commission's Annual Report on Albania 2025, which called on Albania to ensure a high level of ambition and is in line with the EU acquis and European standards for this law:

“This is another indicator of Albania's commitment to undertake key reforms for membership in the European Union.”

This was Doctor Berisha's statement yesterday about the EU ambassador in Tirana:

"I say this to the EU Ambassador, sir, we absolutely respect everyone's sexual orientation, but your efforts to impose standards of multiple gender affiliation, of gender in wide diversity, in addition to the binary one, on Albanian society, and I say here, even in your status you are binary.

"We don't deal with the treatment, he has children, he had a wife, he made his own decisions afterwards, as he explained, because I don't want to deal with his personal life at all."

The Chairman of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, asked the opposition to distance itself from the attack on the European Union ambassador, describing it as "shameful" and harmful to the Democratic Party itself.

"Once again, in parentheses, I wish and hope that by the end of this session someone from the Democratic Party will find the strength and courage to distance themselves from that shameful attack today against the EU ambassador," said Balla.

Addressing the Democratic MPs, Balla emphasized:

"It doesn't do you any honor. It doesn't do you any honor. You laugh, you laugh, you laugh, you laugh, keep laughing, but I'm telling you that attacks against ambassadors have historically harmed your party.

"I hope that laughter will make you an MP again, while you will do your party an honor if one of you, in an elegant manner, without insulting the leader, publicly apologizes."
