Berisha: Albanians have been waiting for a judicial process for 16 years, this
Sali Berisha

During the debate in Parliament on the Ombudsman's activity report, Democratic leader Sali Berisha denounced the lack of justice and the massive violation of the fundamental rights of citizens in Albania.

"Today, in a country where the Constitution has become a dead letter, the most basic human rights are non-existent. Mass detentions are evidence of the bankruptcy of justice and the denial of citizens' freedom,"   Berisha declared.

Referring to official data, he emphasized that Albanians wait up to 16 years for a judicial process, a situation that, according to him, does not exist even in the harshest dictatorships.

"When citizens wait 16 years for justice, this justice no longer exists and its consequence is self-justification. When I think that this denial of this right has brought about 643 registered cases of self-justification, has brought about 180 murders, has brought about 220 injuries, has brought about hundreds of other criminal offenses. Justice 16 years in waiting, is justice that is missing, justice that creates those explosions that we saw from the public execution in the judge's courtroom, which is never accepted of course."

Berisha accused justice institutions of incompetence and lack of will for real reform, also mentioning the fact that the average time frame for reviewing cases has been shortened by only 16 days in one year.

"When I think that the head of the High Council of Justice declares with full responsibility that from one year to the next, the 16-year term has been shortened by only 16 days, I guarantee you that Albanians and citizens of the world in every country, even in dictatorships, are more respected by their justice than in Albania. Missing justice. Justice 16 years in waiting, is missing justice, justice that creates those explosions that we saw from the public execution in the judge's courtroom, which is never accepted of course," he underlined.

According to him, Albanians today are deprived of a right that they enjoyed even in the darkest periods of history.

"We are dealing with the denial of a right that Albanians have enjoyed since the time they were separated from pre-state society. Neither during the Ottoman Empire nor during the dictatorship, citizens have waited so long for justice."
