The two halves of the Democratic Party after 32 years seem to have entered a race to fight communism and the former State Security.

A few days after the official DP led by Enkelejd Alibeja submitted a draft law on decommunization to the Parliament, the rest of the DP led by Sali Berisha has prepared a draft law for the purity of the image, more specifically for the removal of spies of the former Sigurimi of the State from the state pyramid. The draft law is similar to the lustration law of 2008, approved by the DP in the Assembly, but struck down two years later by the Constitutional Court as unconstitutional.

Referring to the content of the draft law, Sali Berisha has taken care to exclude himself as the subject of the law, removing from the categories the position of the secretaries of the Party of Labor of Albania. For years, Berisha has held the political position of secretary of the Labor Party Committee at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tirana.

The draft law provides that those who have been members or candidates of the Political Bureau, members of the Central Committee of the ALP, members of the Presidium of the People's Assembly, investigators and heads of communist justice, collaborators of former State Security, every employee of the State Security bodies, minister, deputy minister of Internal Affairs, heads of internal affairs branches, persons who have graduated from the Higher School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, members of the Central Commission of Deportation-Internment, whistleblower or prosecution witness in political judicial processes. The party secretaries seem to have been deliberately avoided to save Berisha, twice declared non grata by SHAB and Great Britain.

On the other hand, the collaborators of the former State Security are included in the draft law, endangering Ilir Meta, always if the initiative is approved with 84 votes. The Authority for Information on the Documents of the former State Security, through a file referred to the Assembly, has rejected this certificate of purity of Ilir Meta's image, issued by the Mezini and Bezhani commissions, implicating Meta in the former State Security. According to the Authority, Ilir Meta cooperated with the former State Security, spying on his friend, Filip Talo. The authority asked for the removal of the legal hurdle to verify Meta and all those who wave certificates of purity of image.

Ilir Meta has denied that he was an associate of the former State Security, while he has criminally charged the members of the Files Authority for manipulation. Meanwhile, coincidence or not, Berisha's draft law on the punishment of spies of the former State Security comes a few days after Ilir Meta hosted the American ambassador Yuri Kim in the offices of the Freedom Party./Shqiptarja.com
