December 8/ US Embassy: The US is with you on the path to the EU

The US Embassy in Tirana commemorated National Youth Day today with a message on Instagram.

The US Embassy writes that 34 years ago, Albanian students and young people rose up against one of Europe's harshest communist regimes.

“ Today, Albania celebrates National Youth Day, marking 34 years since Albanian students and young people rose up against one of Europe’s harshest communist regimes, marking its downfall and shaping the nation’s future. On December 8, we remember those who fought for democracy. Today’s youth continue to shape Albania’s future, and the United States stands with you as you move forward on your path toward EU membership ,” the US embassy wrote on Facebook.

Today marks December 8, National Youth Day.

Proclaimed since 2009 by the Albanian Parliament, this date is commemorated as a national holiday in honor of all the students of December 1990 and all Albanian youth.

On December 8, 1990, a group of students and professors of the University of Tirana became the initiators and protagonists of the great historical turning point, the peaceful protests that brought about the fall of the communist system and the birth of democracy.
