Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri

King Mohammed VI of Morocco has tasked Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri , national coordinator of the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM), with forming a government, following her party's victory in the parliamentary elections.

The appointment marks a historic moment for Morocco, as El Mansouri becomes the first woman to lead the country's government.

The monarch received El Mansour at the royal palace in Rabat and tasked him with forming the new cabinet.

PAM, a center-right party and part of the outgoing governing coalition, secured 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives.

The result does not give the party an absolute majority, which will force El Mansour to negotiate with other political forces to create a governing coalition.

Despite the appointment of the prime minister, the Moroccan monarch retains significant powers in running the country, especially in strategic sectors.

El Mansouri, a 50-year-old lawyer, joined PAM since its founding in 2008. She became known in Marrakesh after, at the age of 33, she was elected the city's first female mayor in 2009.

She was re-elected to this post in 2021 and then served as Minister of Housing in the government led by Aziz Ahanoush.

During the election campaign, her party promised that economic growth would average 5% per year and that inflation would be reduced to 2%, with the aim of protecting citizens' purchasing power and creating at least one million new jobs.

The National Rally of Independents (RNI), from which outgoing Prime Minister Aziz Ahanoush comes, came in second in the election with 66 seats, losing 30 seats compared to the previous election. The Istiqlal Party secured 65 seats.

In opposition, the Justice and Development Party (PJD), which focused its campaign on the fight against corruption, increased its number of seats from 13 to 54.

The day after the elections, its secretary general, Abdelilah Benkirane, ruled out the possibility of the party participating in a coalition government.
