Prices of food and other products in the country are increasing faster than the Bank of Albania's expectations.

"The price increase has come mainly from factors related to costs and international markets, but also from domestic developments in the economy. These pressures have been reflected more quickly than we had anticipated in our projections," said Governor Gent Sejko.

Before it gets better, it will get worse. Prices will continue to rise until at least the middle of next year.

"We expect these pressures to be temporary and gradually ease. Barring further external shocks, monetary conditions and economic developments are expected to help return inflation to the target level," Sejko said.

The good news remains that the country's overall economy is expected to perform well.

"The Albanian economy continues to show good resilience, supported by consumption, investments and activity in some of the main sectors. This gives us a good basis to maintain a positive outlook for economic activity," said Sejko.

Despite the risk of another wave of inflation, the Bank of Albania keeps the base interest rate for the lek unchanged at 2.5 percent
