Russia declares Covid-style 'plague quarantine' in Siberia after lab worker dies

An employee at an anti-plague institute in the Irkutsk region of Siberia who died after rumors of the spread of the "black death" was diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown origin.

This has caused residents of the Irkutsk region, Russia, to be alarmed by rumors of a possible outbreak of pneumonic plague in this Siberian area. The rumors began to spread rapidly after the death of an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute.

Darya Shipilova died in the early hours of October 2 in the intensive care unit of the district hospital in the town of Shelekhov. According to local media, she broke a test tube containing the plague pathogen. The incident prompted authorities to impose Covid-19-style quarantine measures, with about 200 people placed under strict medical supervision.

Meanwhile, several hospitals in Irkutsk were immediately closed and quarantined for the past three weeks. On Saturday, masks became mandatory as a preventive measure at the Irkutsk aluminum plant in Shelekhov.

The victim, a 28-year-old lab assistant, specialized in research on dangerous pathogens.

According to the main account reported by her colleagues and independent media, on September 25, while working with live biological material in the laboratory, she accidentally broke a test tube containing the dangerous bacterium Yersinia pestis. Two days later, Shipilova’s condition suddenly worsened. She was rushed to the Shelekhov district hospital. At first, doctors, unaware of what had happened, suspected a severe case of coronavirus and admitted her to a specialized Covid unit.

However, the rapid deterioration and clinical appearance forced them to perform rapid tests for very dangerous infections. The patient was put on a ventilator, but her life could not be saved. The pulmonary form of the plague develops extremely quickly and without rapid and targeted treatment with antibiotics, it is almost always fatal.

For the first 24 hours, authorities in the Irkutsk region and Governor Igor Kobzev avoided using the word plague. On October 2, Kobzev spoke of a very dangerous infection and said that “the situation is under strict control.” The next day, authorities in Baikalsk urged residents not to travel to Shelekhov due to the plague, but deleted the post a few hours later.
