Sometime around the 12th century, Saxo Grammaticus undertook to write the history of Denmark, chronicle of mythology, history and its conquests. His work would inspire many artists and adaptations.
One of the most terrifying tales was that of Amleth, the grandson of a king. His father was killed by his brother and he married Amleth's mother. Amleth pretended to be mad to escape his uncle's sword, and, in the end, retaliated.
This is also the subject of the Shakespearean tragedy of the Danish prince, commonly known as Hamlet and borrowed from Saxo. However, historians believe that Saxo Grammaticus's account of Amleth was also an adaptation, based on ancient Icelandic epics.
Whereas now, at a time when medieval legends seem to be sparking more and more the imagination of filmmakers the narrative comes as The Northman, a Viking epic, by director Robert Eggers.
The main role of The Northman is entrusted to Alexander Skarsgård. The cast also includes Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Claes Bang, Willem Dafoe and Björk.
Eggers, who rewrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet Sjón, also received the help of Icelandic and Viking history specialists during filming. Reproduction of the film with great care towards ancient archeology and symbolism makes The Northman one of the most faithful productions to Viking history that has ever been realized.
But beyond fidelity to the era in question, The Northman is an adaptation of Saxo's narrative. He is the hereditary prince, who sees his uncle kill his father and takes his mother. He escapes and an adviser tells the young king that Amleth has drowned. Amleth vows to avenge her father, save her mother, and kill her uncle. Amleth grows up as a plundering Viking and, pretending to be a slave, approaches his uncle.
So in The Northman there is pretense, but not madness.

Ai thjesht do të rimarrë çfarë i përket. Përpjekja e tij për t'u hakmarrë është e ndërtuar mbi themele të lëkundshme. Dhe në fund, gjithçka duket pak e kotë.
He is simply on the path determined for him by fate. Among the latest films on the medieval era, this makes The Northman much closer to the worldview of its time.
Above all The Northman does not try to condemn toxic masculinity by showing that it has ravaged men for centuries less often or by showing that women’s limited freedom has left them backward.
This was not the intention of Saxo Grammaticus and Eggers recreated the Middle Ages with frightening accuracy, putting us in front of a strange myth, in the face of something we have always known but forgotten.
Today we think we have freedom of action, that we are "the captains of our ships." But thousands of years ago, the worldview was different. They may have known something we do not know./ Alissa Wilkinson - VOX.com
