How the dome of the famous Florence cathedral was built

Architect Manuel Bravo likes to share his passion for history and architecture by creating informative videos about the world's most famous monuments.

From the Egyptian pyramids to the Sagrada Familia, Bravo breaks down everything you need to know about architecture and answers many of the public's burning questions.

In a separate video, he focuses on one of the most famous buildings in Italy – Florence Cathedral.

In particular, he shares the fascinating story of how an architect took a remarkable leap into the world of architecture and successfully built what was at the time the largest dome in the world.

Construction of the cathedral, officially named Santa Maria del Fiore, began in 1296. But the mystery of how to build the dome was not solved until the city held a public competition in 1418 with the goal of completing the work.

Then the sculptor and architect Filippo Brunelleschi decided to try his hand at a crazy project. His project won the competition, thanks in part to a model that his friend and fellow sculptor Donatello helped him create.

Brunelleschi would spend the latter part of his life almost entirely focused on building the dome. Cleverly seeking inspiration in the architecture of Ancient Rome and, in particular, the Pantheon, he succeeded in realizing his vision and giving the city a cathedral worthy of its reputation.
