Why can't we remember our dreams? What studies say
Dreams

Even in those lucky days when you wake up with the memory of the dream that still lingers in your mind, it is very likely that it will only last a minute and this memory will disappear. If this happened during the day, forgetting so much of the latest experiences so quickly would surely prompt you to go see a doctor.

However, not remembering the dreams we see in sleep is normal.

Why? "We tend to forget dreams right away, and it is likely that people who rarely report the dreams they see forget them more easily," says Thomas Andrilon, a neuroscientist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

In case you do not remember anything, it can be hard to believe that you have actually seen a dream. But studies consistently show that even people who have not remembered a single dream in decades or even in their entire lives, remember them if they woke up at the right moment, says Andrilon. While the exact reason is not fully known, scientists have gained some knowledge on the processes of memory during sleep, leading to some ideas that may explain our particular forgetfulness.

You are awake, what about your hippocampus?

According to a 2011 study published in the journal Neuron, when we sleep not all regions of the brain are deactivated at the same time. Researchers have discovered that one of the last regions to "sleep" is the hippocampus, a curved structure located within each hemisphere of the brain, that plays a very important role in shifting information from short-term to long-term memory.

If the hippocampus is the last to fall asleep, it may also be the last to wake up, Andrilon says. "So you may have the memory of a dream in your short-term memory, but since the hippocampus is not yet fully awake, your brain is not able to carry all that memory," he said.

If you plan to improve your dream memory, there are some tricks you can try. Robert Stikgold, associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, suggests drinking water before bed because it will make you wake up at night to use the bathroom.

"These midnight awakenings are often accompanied by a recollection of dreams," Stikgold told The New York Times. When you lie down to sleep, constantly reminding yourself that you want to remember your dreams can increase your chances of this actually happening.

It also helps keep a diary of dreams, several studies have suggested. Once you wake up, keep your eyes closed, stay still, and constantly reproduce the memory of your dreams until your hippocampus has the ability to reach and store memory properly.
