Albanian craftsmanship in the production of carnival masks has attracted the attention of the international media, while this year's carnivals are held in Venice.
AFP has dedicated a report to the Venetian mask workshop in Shkodër, 'Venice Art Mask Factory', where more than 20 thousand masks are produced every year.
Most of these handmade masks make their way across the Adriatic Sea to Venice, where this year's carnivals are dedicated to the explorer Marco Polo, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of his death, considered one of Venice's most iconic residents.
"With feathers, lace and Swarovski crystals, this year's Venetian masks are made to draw all eyes thanks to their glittering elegance," Edmond Angoni, the owner and main artist behind the Venice Art Mask Factory, told AFP.
Angoni also owns 8 shops in Venice where his costume creations, gilded masks and luxurious dresses, sell for up to 5,000 euros each.
Among the most popular items this year are large animal masks inspired by the works of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.
Each new model is first sculpted in clay, then smoothed with layers of paper.
Since opening its doors in 1997, Angoni's studio has produced hundreds of thousands of masks, including those worn in Stanley Kubrick's erotic thriller Eyes Wide Shut, starring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.
Shkodra has an early tradition of organizing carnivals, which used to be called "Festa e Surretërve". The organization of this masked party dates back to Shkodër since 1860.
