Croatian tourism has long been facing a number of challenges that negatively affect its development and reputation.
In addition to strategic problems such as the lack of a basic development plan and non-compliance with legal regulations, there are also daily problems faced by tourists and local residents.
One such problem is the will of individuals who appropriate and surround public beaches, thus violating the law and jeopardizing free access to the coast. This problem is particularly pronounced during the summer months, when the largest number of tourists are present. However, another problem has appeared recently, which is related to accommodation.
An example recently spread on social networks includes an extra payment in case an apartment is rented and the air conditioner is turned on without the owner's knowledge. The additional fee is 150 euros.
Other items on this new price list may be controversial because prices are set arbitrarily, but owners have the right to do so.
Such incidents not only negatively affect the tourist experience, but also Croatia's reputation as a tourist destination. To improve the situation and ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism, it is necessary to introduce stricter quality controls. Tourist inspectorates must regularly check accommodation facilities to ensure that they meet basic standards of cleanliness and functionality.
Online accommodation booking platforms must ensure that accommodation information, including the current condition of facilities and additional costs, is presented objectively and transparently.
But also the introduction of an efficient system for resolving tourist complaints to quickly respond to problems and prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
