The amazing story behind the famous photo of Einstein with his tongue out
Albert Einstein shows his tongue on the occasion of his 72nd birthday

The most famous image of history's greatest mind was taken in 1951, completely by accident. Here's the story

On July 25, 2017, the auction took place for what is probably the most famous image of Albert Einstein.

The great scientist shows his tongue to photographer Arthur Sasse, turning out to be more surprising than expected.

The photo was taken on March 14, 1951, on the occasion of Einstein's 72nd birthday, and in a few months it went around the world.

Even some Nobel laureates asked their colleague for an autographed copy of the photo.

It is not the first time that prints of the photo with the scientist's autograph have been auctioned. In the past, they have also reached important quotas, such as the one sold in 2009 for 74,324 dollars.

But in July of this year, a record figure was set. The picture was bought for $125,000.

But why did an influential and respected character pose in an unusual way considering the grim 50s?

History

The photo was taken outside the Princeton Club, where a group of colleagues had organized a party for Einstein's birthday.

Arthur Sasse was one of the many photographers waiting for the father of relativity to leave the party to photograph him.

When he saw her get into the car with Frank Aydelotte, director of the Institute for Advanced Study, and his wife, the photographer came up to her, insistently asking her to smile for one last photo.

But Einstein, who throughout the evening had given hundreds of smiles and posed for dozens of photos, was clearly tired. To show the photographer Sasse that it was no longer the case to follow him, he sticks out his tongue.

So nothing organized. Just a spontaneous action that years later many "VIPs" began to imitate before the insistence of the paparazzi.

Postcards

Not everyone agreed with the photo being published. Some newspapers thought long and hard before publishing.

The gloomy climate of the Cold War and McCarthyism did not favor irony.

But Einstein himself was amused by the photo and requested a few copies for his personal use. After removing the faces of the Aydelotte couple, he made some postcards and sent them to his friends.

The fact that Einstein died 4 years later, on April 17, 1955, at the age of 76 years, leaving the world with the memory of an absolute genius, but who was also charming and "human", probably contributed to the success of the photo.
