The Pyramid of Cheops will again be subject to the penetrating "eye" of detectors down to the level of subatomic particles

The Cheops Pyramid can again be subjected to the penetrating "eye" of detectors down to the level of sub-atomic particles. A group of scientists are planning a new scan of the famous monument with an imaging technique, which studies cosmic rays and penetrates through the rock, to discover what is inside the structure. Above all, researchers hope to understand what the two mysterious empty spaces, one of which is 30 meters long, first discovered in 2017, hide.

A large tomb

The Pyramid of Cheops, or the Great Pyramid of Giza, is the most impressive in the area. Located not far from Cairo, it is the most monumental pyramid ever built in Ancient Egypt. It is believed that the pyramid, which is the oldest of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, and the only one that is fully preserved, was thought to be the tomb of Pharaoh Kufu, who reigned in Egypt during the fourth dynasty, in the years 2509-2483 BC .

The pyramid is 139 meters high and 230 wide. Inside there are 3 popular rooms, located at different heights (basement, queen and king's room) and a series of connecting tunnels, the most important of which is the Grand Gallery, 46.7 meters long. Apart from these technical details, we know very little about how the monument was built, and what else it contains.

Cosmic rays

For this reason, during 2015-2017, a group of archaeologists from France and Japan, led by the Paris-based Institute for the Preservation of Innovation Innovation, analyzed the pyramid with a technique based on cosmic ray detection - the same used to look inside volcanoes - very energetic particles of galactic and extragalactic origin that hit the Earth from all directions, and move at a speed that is close to that of light. They aimed to identify muons, negatively charged particles, that form when cosmic rays interact with atoms in the Earth's atmosphere.

What secrets does the Pyramid of Cheops still hide?

What was the purpose of the new spaces that were discovered?

Once the tools are available, it will take another year for the preliminary results; 2-3 years of observation, to have a complete and super sensitive map of the inside of the pyramid. Hence the mystery continues…
