Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz were on a joint visit to Saxony, Germany, to familiarize Serbia with sustainable and environmentally friendly methods for extracting lithium, a key resource for the production of electric vehicle batteries.

The Freiberg University of Mining and Technology is an international leader in research into sustainable mining technologies.

The institution has developed the COOL method, which not only avoids CO2 emissions, but also uses renewable energy and ensures that the extracted material is immediately ready for battery production, without the need for additional processing.

Vu?i? expressed his great interest in this approach, saying: “What is done in Zinnwald can also be applied in Jadar.” The Jadar region in Serbia has the largest lithium reserves in Europe, but facing environmental concerns has led the Serbian government to seek solutions that minimize the negative impact on nature and local communities.

Scholz: Serbia-Kosovo normalization and EU integration a priority

During the meeting in Freiberg, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz assured Germany's support for the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU. He particularly stressed the importance of good neighborly relations, especially between Serbia and Kosovo. " We will try to facilitate the normalization of these relations and will continue to do so in the future. For me personally, this issue has a high priority ," said Scholz, adding: "There are agreements reached, which I hope will be implemented step by step. You know the Ohrid Agreement."

Hacker : I hope the Chancellor was not deceived by the Serbian President

Serbia-Germany cooperation is viewed with criticism by many experts and politicians. Thomas Hacker, the spokesman for European policy and rapporteur for the Western Balkans of the FDP parliamentary group, now in opposition, also expressed concern about Vu?i?'s visit to Saxony. In a statement distributed to German media, which DW also has, the liberal politician said: "Hacker said: 'I very much hope that Chancellor Scholz has not been deceived by President Vu?i?, who is known for manipulating public opinion and slandering critics.'"

Hacker also noted that Germany is against opening Cluster 3 in Serbia's EU accession negotiations, due to the lack of progress on fundamental issues./ DW
