US President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday named Devin Nunes, CEO of the Truth Social platform, which is owned by the American tycoon, as the next head of the Presidency's intelligence advisory body.
"Devin will draw on his experience, having served as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and played a key role in exposing Russian collusion, to provide me with independent assessments of the effectiveness and reliability of U.S. intelligence activities," Trump said after Nunes' appointment, via a post on Truth Social.
Devin Nunes was a member of the US Congress for 19 years (2003-2022) and was also the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee during Donald Trump's first term as president, from 2017-2021.
The former Republican congressman had accused the FBI of abusing its power to spy on a member of Donald Trump's campaign team who had contacts with Russia, as part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
Trump clarified that Nunes will remain CEO of Truth Social while leading the White House advisory body. The President's Intelligence Advisory Board (PIAB) has the authority to provide the US head of state with independent assessments of the work of intelligence services.
The appointment was announced two weeks after Trump, who will be sworn in and take office on January 20, 2025, nominated another loyalist, Kass Patel, as the next FBI director.
