US President Donald Trump on Thursday fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, a close ally of his who had been criticized for her handling of the Epstein files.

Sources close to the developments indicate that the conversation between them was tense, while Trump had hinted that Bondi would not stay in this position long and that her replacement was a matter of time.

According to CNN, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche (Trump's former personal lawyer) will serve as acting attorney.

Meanwhile, Associated Press sources said Trump had privately discussed the possibility of replacing Bondi with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin.

In these conversations, the president expressed dissatisfaction with Bondi over the handling of the Epstein files and the obstacles the Justice Department had encountered in investigating his political opponents.

Zeldin, a former Republican congressman from New York who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2022, has emerged as one of Trump's favorites. At an event in February, the president called him "our secret weapon."

However, in a White House statement, Trump said: "Attorney General Pam Bondi is a wonderful person and is doing a great job."

Bondi's firing is expected to open new debate over the direction of the Justice Department.
