Trump penalizes Croatia, suspends its entry into the OECD

Croatia has encountered its first major obstacle to joining the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), following a shift in US foreign policy under Donald Trump.

Due to the conflict between the US and the European Union over tariffs, Croatia's entry into the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) has been temporarily suspended, CroatiaWeek reports.

The vote has been postponed and the Croatian government assures that everything will go according to plan, reports the Croatian newspaper Jutarnji list.

In 19 out of 25 OECD committees, Croatia has closed accession talks and has progressed faster than expected in the negotiations. But when it came to the trade committee's turn, the vote was postponed until further notice.

"The vote in the Trade Committee will take place when the conditions are right. We are working with our American and OECD partners on all issues related to our entry into the OECD," said Zdenko Lucić, state adviser at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

He added that Croatia still has a lot of work to do, as it wants to close the debate in the remaining six committees by the end of the year.

"At the moment, everything is going according to plan and the only thing left is OECD entry by the middle of next year," Lucić explained.

However, this is not the only complication in recent US-Croatian relations. An agreement to avoid double taxation, which until recently seemed achievable, has still not been put on the agenda. A Republican senator who deals specifically with relations with Croatia explains:

"I'm afraid the problem was in Congress, and also the changes in our Treasury Department. When it first opened in 2022, it was a different administration that didn't want to make changes," said David Joyce.
