US President Donald Trump has stated that he does not regret the decision to start a war with Iran and that, if faced with the same situation again, he would act in the same way.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he would have carried out the attack even if he had known in advance that the conflict could affect the outcome of the midterm elections.
During the interview, journalist Laura Ingraham told the US president that, without war with Iran, Republicans would enter the election in a more favorable position. Trump responded that the risk of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons was far greater than the political consequences that conflict could bring.
"If I had it to do over again, I would do exactly what I did," Trump declared.
He argued that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a threat not only to Israel and Middle Eastern countries, but also to American cities.
The statements come at a time when concerns about the duration of the conflict have increased. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, top White House advisers have discussed with Trump the possibility of the war lasting beyond his current presidential term.
However, the US president continues to say that the conflict will end after the midterm elections, or even earlier. He has also stated that the end of the war would bring a decrease in oil and gasoline prices.
In another interview with NewsNation, Trump denied Iranian reports that an attack on a US base in Jordan had caused damage to US military assets.
"No harm. Nothing," Trump said, when asked about the allegations.
