An air patrol of US and Canadian fighter jets this week encountered Russian fighter jets that were spotted in the Arctic, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Thursday.

The Russian plane, which remained in international airspace, was not seen as a threat, but eight military aircraft were dispatched to monitor its activity, NORAD said in a statement.

Two Canadian CF-18 fighter jets and a refueling aircraft were launched from the Canadian NORAD region, while two US F-35 fighter jets and two refueling aircraft tankers were launched from the Alaska NORAD region.

The Alaska base also sent an E-3 airborne warning and control system, or AWAC, aircraft, which the Air Force says "can detect, identify and track" enemy forces far from the borders of the United States and NATO.

A few hours later, NORAD said it also deployed two F-16 fighter jets from Alaska to Greenland in order to "advance NORAD's presence in the Arctic." The command said the move was "not in response to any current threat."

This comes just weeks after four Russian fighter jets were placed under surveillance by NORAD aircraft as they flew near Alaska.

The Arctic has become a critical geopolitical focal point in recent years, attracting the attention of Russia, China and the US, which has its northernmost military base in Greenland.
