British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak fired Conservative Party leader Nadhim Zahawi on Sunday after an investigation concluded he committed serious misconduct by concealing an investigation into his taxes. It is the latest scandal to hit the prime minister's party.

Mr Sunak had initially backed Mr Zahawi but then asked an independent adviser to investigate the matter after it emerged Mr Zahawi had reached a settlement with the British tax agency HMRC last year over his taxes. .

Mr Zahawi has said the tax authority concluded he had been "careless" with his declarations but had not deliberately misrepresented to pay less tax, confirming he had paid a penalty to HMRC.

Independent counsel appointed by Mr. Sunak, Laurie Magnus, said that Mr. Zahawi did not disclose that his taxes were being investigated when he was briefly appointed finance minister last year and did not provide details when Mr. Sunak appointed him to his current role.

"Following the completion of the Independent Counsel's investigation, it is clear that there has been a serious breach of the Ministerial Code," Mr Sunak said in a letter to Mr Zahawi.

"As a result, I am announcing my decision to remove you from office."

The sacking of the party leader is another concern for Mr Sunak, after a chaotic year with three different British prime ministers.

His government, which is grappling with the highest inflation in decades and a wave of public sector strikes, has fared poorly in polls ahead of an expected 2024 election./VOA
