US, deadly attack on a drug ship in the Caribbean: Why the attack will have
Donald Trump

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the US military "just shot down a drug ship," adding that "the drugs have been coming in for a long time, and these ships were coming mainly from Venezuela."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also announced that the United States had carried out a deadly attack on a suspected drug-trafficking ship in the southern Caribbean.

“As the president just announced, the US military conducted an attack on a drug ship that had left Venezuela and was operated by a declared 'narco-terrorist' organization, ” Rubio wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

This action represents a significant escalation of the Trump administration's policy toward drug cartels, some of which have been designated foreign terrorist organizations.

The move could have serious consequences for the region, where the US has deployed military capabilities, and could trigger a reaction from Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
