Another sentence has been handed down to Croatia's former EU Funds minister, Gabrijela Zalac, who was found guilty of misuse of office and public funds.
According to the official announcement from the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), Zalac has been sentenced to 7 months in prison for the illegal use of about 10,000 euros from EU funds, spent on dinners and luxury events on at least nine different occasions.
Croatian media reports that one of the expenses included her 40th birthday party, for which European funds were also used.
Zalac was dismissed from office in 2019, while he was earlier arrested in 2021. She has pleaded guilty and refunded the full amount, benefiting from a sentencing agreement.
This is not the only case against her. In June 2025, the former minister was sentenced to 2 years in prison for another corruption affair, where she was accused of abuse of office and illegal influence, in connection with the tender for a new IT system in the ministry she led.
In that case, the damage caused was over 1.3 million euros, while she agreed to return 200 thousand euros as partial compensation for the financial damage.
Gabrijela Zalac is just one of several senior figures in the conservative HDZ party who have resigned or been convicted of corruption affairs since Prime Minister Andrej Pllenković came to power in 2016.
