The Trump family has earned a fortune of $5 billion from its cryptocurrency business, making its wealth from virtual currencies more valuable than its empire of properties.

On Tuesday, a cryptocurrency launched by World Liberty Financial began trading on various exchanges, giving owners the opportunity to buy and sell cryptocurrency for the first time.

The token, known as WLFI, started trading at 30 cents per coin before falling to 24 cents. At this price, the Trump family has created a fortune of $5.4 billion. They own 22.5 billion WLFI digital currencies, almost a quarter of the total supply.

The cryptocurrency venture was launched last year while the US president was running for the White House. Trump's sons, Eric, Donald Jr. and Barron, are co-founders of the business, while the president is "co-founder emeritus".

Even though cryptos are "locked," meaning they can't currently sell them, the valuation of 24 cents per unit gives them a fortune of $5.4 billion on paper.

This means that the Trump family's cryptocurrency holdings are now believed to be worth more than the family's real estate wealth built by Fred Trump, the president's father. Donald Trump was known as a New York property tycoon before breaking into the media and television.

It is not clear how much of the Trump family's cryptocurrency wealth can be realized. Cryptocurrencies are often traded with momentum and enthusiasm, as their usefulness is less clear, and a big sale is likely to lead to a decline in values.
