Britain suspends applications for family reunification in the United Kingdom!

The British government is temporarily suspending new applications for a scheme that allows refugees to bring their family members to the UK.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the measure, which comes into effect this week, would mean refugees would face the same restrictions as other migrants hoping to join family in the UK.

These rules generally require the applicant to have an annual income of at least £29,000 and secure suitable accommodation, while the accompanying family member must demonstrate basic English language skills.

Conservative Home Secretary Chris Philp said " small changes to family reunification rules are not enough " to tackle the UK's border security crisis. The announcement comes on the day Parliament returned from its summer recess, a period dominated by criticism of the use of hotels to house migrants arriving by dinghy.

On Monday, Cooper announced the temporary suspension of new applications under the existing family reunification pathway for refugees, which allowed them to bring their family without any conditions.

Cooper said the rules " were created many years ago to help families separated by war, conflict and persecution ," but are now out of line with the practices of neighboring countries and require restrictions.

According to her, countries like Denmark and Switzerland require refugees to wait two years before applying for family reunification, giving them time to find work and housing to support relatives when they arrive.

In contrast, in the UK " these applications come in on average within a month ", often before the refugee himself leaves temporary asylum accommodation, she added.

As a result, many refugee families turn to municipalities for help to avoid housing shortages, accounting for more than a quarter of homelessness in some local authorities.

Refugees seeking to bring family to the UK will have to follow the usual immigration rules, which include numerous restrictions.

Further reforms to family reunification pathways are expected to be announced later this year, with the aim of their implementation by spring.

The government has faced pressure after a summer filled with news about dinghy crossings and protests against the use of hotels for asylum seekers.

She has promised to end the use of hotels to house asylum seekers by 2029.

More than 28,000 migrants have arrived in the UK by dinghy since the start of the year, more than in the same period in 2024.

In August, 55 dinghies crossed the Channel, the lowest figure for the month of August since 2019.

However, it appears that smuggling gangs are putting more people on each vehicle; last month there was an average of 65 people per raft.
