"Useless and disgusting summit", the media in Kiev explode: Putin got
Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump

A long-awaited summit, constructive for some, disappointing for others: But beyond the political leaders, how did the major world media view the Alaska meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin?

For the New York Times, the White House chief and the Kremlin chief appeared as friends, but an agreement on Ukraine was not reached. President Trump, the prestigious newspaper writes, reserved a warm welcome for Putin, thus practically ending his international isolation. But Putin, however, refused to end the conflict.

Much fanfare, little result is the conclusion of the Washington Post, which emphasizes that the summit started with a red carpet, but ended sooner than expected, with a gloomy outcome. Trump fails to secure a deal on Ukraine at the Alaska summit, writes the Financial Times. The press in Kiev is even harsher in its comments.

“A futile and disgusting summit, Putin was treated like a king,” writes the Kyiv Independent. In the inflammatory editorial, the meeting is described as a disgrace. “Trump didn’t get what he wanted, but Putin? He did.” The Russian dictator was beaming from the moment he stepped off his plane onto American soil. The newspaper also highlights the stark disparity in the reserved treatment of Volodymyr Zelensky, who in February faced a “public humiliation” when meeting Trump at the White House. The Russian president, on the other hand, the article continues, was treated well and pampered.

Both episodes, the Kyiv Independent continues, were shameful. The editorial's conclusion is that Trump fails to understand that Putin has not a transactional but a messianic approach to Ukraine. He essentially loves Ukraine for Russia, period," the article continues.
