The United States Coast Guard detected a Russian military vessel on October 29 approximately 24 km south of Oahu, near US territorial waters, it said in a statement on Thursday.

A Coast Guard aircraft and ship "responded to the Russian Federation Navy General Auxiliary Intelligence vessel Kareliya," the US Coast Guard said.

"Acting in accordance with international law, Coast Guard personnel are monitoring the activities of the Russian vessel near U.S. territorial waters to provide maritime security for U.S. vessels operating in the area and to support U.S. homeland defense efforts," the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Coast Guard said that under international law, foreign military vessels can "transit and operate outside the territorial waters of other nations, which extend up to 12 nautical miles from the coast."
