Beijing has summoned the Japanese ambassador to lodge a formal protest over comments made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.

"Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong summoned Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi to lodge a formal protest regarding the incorrect comments made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding China," authorities said.

Foreign media write that last week, Takaichi told the Japanese parliament that in the event of a military attack by China on Taiwan, it would be justified to send Japanese troops to defend the island as part of legitimate collective defense.
