Massive operation in Athens / 40 members of a network that defrauded the elderly

A major police operation was carried out on Thursday in Athens, Greece, to dismantle a Roma community network that was defrauding the elderly.

Members of this group claimed to be employees of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator, accountants and public officials.

So far, 40 people have been arrested as part of the operation by the Under-Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Prosecution, while investigations continue in Attica and Corinth. According to Greek authorities, the criminal organization is suspected of being involved in more than 1,000 cases of fraud and theft, benefiting from illegal profits estimated at approximately 7.6 million euros.

In a video published in Greek media, armed police officers can be seen raiding the home of a Roma gang member, breaking down the door to get inside.

This is one of the biggest cases that have concerned the prosecution authorities in recent years, while investigations have also been expanded to Korydallos prison, where the possible involvement of Roma prisoners is being examined.
