Chinese pressure: Will Donald Trump give up on the $14 billion deal?

The issue of US arms sales to Taiwan is expected to be one of the main topics in the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

According to the New York Times, the Chinese president is expected to ask Trump to freeze the planned sale of about $14 billion worth of arms to Taiwan.

To pressure Trump, Xi could threaten new restrictions on Chinese exports of rare earth minerals. He could also signal that approving the arms sale could jeopardize his participation in the G20 summit in Miami in December.

On the other hand, Trump could ask Beijing to increase pressure on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, offering in return to postpone arms sales to Taiwan.
