The Spanish Civil Guard has warned citizens about a fraud that is happening recently through mobile phones.
Among the scams related to mobile phones, Spanish institutions have found that one of the preferred methods of cybercriminals is phone calls.
"Many times it's just SPAM, others (increasingly common) are impersonations of loved ones to get money or bank details, while others just consist of a missed phone call," writes eleconomista.
And it seems unlikely that a missed call, that is, one that you do not receive and do not interact with anyone, can pose a risk to your person and money. However, behind it lies one of the most effective tricks globally, and its great effectiveness is due to the simplicity of the trick.
The normal thing when we get a call the most normal thing is to unlock it and see who was calling and retrieve the number we just lost. That's all it takes and you've fallen prey to fraud from missed calls.
To make the call lost, cybercriminals call your phone number, but hang up so quickly that they don't even have a chance to unlock it if you have it in your hand. In this way the victim sees that there is a call from an unknown number and since people are curious by nature, it is normal for them to return it to know who is behind that call.
This is exactly what the cybercriminal is looking for, as these numbers correspond to phones that are outside the country and therefore call them have an additional charge.
The trick is that cybercriminals get a percentage of the fee they charge the victim and may even get extra money if the victim stays on the phone for a longer time.
The Civil Guard also emphasizes the danger in a post on Twitter, where it writes: "If you see a missed call from a number that has any of these prefixes, it is better to ignore it: there is the prefix 355 (Albania), 225 (Coast of Ivory), 233 (Ghana) and 234 (Nigeria).
