The United Arab Emirates has said a drone attack has caused a fire near the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi, in an incident that authorities have described as a "dangerous escalation" of tensions in the region.

According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, three drones entered the country's airspace from the "direction of the western border." Two of them were intercepted by air defense systems, while the third drone hit an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah power plant, causing a fire.

Authorities confirmed that no one was injured and that the level of radiological safety at the plant was not affected. It was also announced that the plant continues to operate normally, while safety precautions have been strengthened.

The UAE Foreign Ministry condemned the incident as an "unacceptable act of aggression," stressing that targeting civilian nuclear energy facilities constitutes a violation of international law, the United Nations Charter and humanitarian principles.

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it was closely monitoring the situation. The agency's director general, Rafael Grossi, expressed "deep concern" about the incident and called for "maximum military restraint."

Emirati authorities have not yet officially identified the origin of the attack, but the incident comes in a tense regional climate following the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran, which erupted in late February.

The Emirates have previously accused Iran of attacks on energy and economic infrastructure in the Persian Gulf, while Tehran has claimed that US allies in the region have allowed their territory to be used for military operations against Iran.

Despite a ceasefire reached in April between the US and Iran, sporadic exchanges of attacks in the region have continued. US President Donald Trump recently declared that the ceasefire was in “vital support”, while tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and regional security remain high.
