Google boss warns: No company will escape consequences if AI bubble bursts
Sundar Pichai

The head of Alphabet, Google's parent company, Sundar Pichai, has warned that no technology company will be left untouched if the artificial intelligence (AI) industry faces a sudden financial crisis.

The statements were made to BBC News, at a time when the values of shares in the AI sector have increased rapidly in recent months.

Pichai described the surge in AI investment as an “extraordinary moment,” but acknowledged that there are also elements of “irrationality” in this global boom. He said Google is prepared for any possible scenario, but stressed, “I don’t think any company is going to be immune, including us.”

The rapid growth of investments, according to him, brings risks similar to the period before the bursting of the dotcom bubble in the 2000s.

Alphabet shares have doubled in value in seven months, reaching $3.5 trillion. Investors see great potential in Google's ability to compete with OpenAI, as the US company expands the development of specialized AI chips to rival Nvidia, which recently reached a record $5 trillion valuation.

However, some analysts warn that the web of deals surrounding OpenAI, worth $1.4 trillion, remains complex and difficult to justify, while the company's revenue projections are lower than the level of investment.

The company is significantly increasing its presence in the British market, with a £5 billion investment in infrastructure and research over the next two years. Pichai said the DeepMind unit in London will conduct “high-end” research, while for the first time Google will train its AI models within the UK.

The Alphabet CEO warned of the growing energy demands of AI technology, which last year accounted for 1.5% of global energy consumption. He said countries must invest in new energy capacity to avoid stifling economic development.

Pichai acknowledged that rising energy demand has led to delays in the company's climate goals, but added that Google remains committed to reaching net-zero by 2030.

According to Pichai, AI is the "most profound technology" humanity has ever developed. He said it will transform the way we work in many professions, while bringing both societal challenges and new opportunities.

"Professions will remain, but the way we work will change and those who adapt will do better," he said.
