Storm warning in Britain after record heatwave in May

A yellow storm warning has been issued for parts of England and Wales, as forecasters warn of transport disruption, flooding and lightning strikes after a record-breaking heatwave in May.

The British national meteorological agency 'Met Office' said the warning will be in place until midnight, covering most of Wales and parts of southwest England.

Heavy rain, hail and lightning are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening, while drivers have been warned to expect difficult conditions due to water on the roads and spray.

Forecasters said some areas could experience flash rainfall that could cause local flooding, while short-term power outages and damage to buildings from lightning strikes are also possible.

Public transport services may face delays, particularly during the evening commute, as storms move through affected areas.

The warning comes after temperatures rose sharply earlier this week during a record-breaking May heatwave in parts of the UK.

The Met Office said warm and humid conditions have increased the chance of storms developing, with some areas expected to experience intense rainfall within a short period of time.

Meteorologists said the unsettled weather was likely to end the recent hot spell, with cooler temperatures forecast later in the week.
