Israeli Minister: Gaza should be annexed if Hamas does not surrender
Bezalel Smotrich

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has called on his government to take steps toward annexing parts of the Gaza Strip if Hamas refuses to surrender.

Known for his extreme right-wing positions, Bezalel Smotrich has long been positioned against any agreement aimed at ending the nearly two-year war with Hamas, presenting his plan for a "victory in Gaza by the end of the year" during a press conference held in Jerusalem.

Under Smotrich's plan, Hamas would be given an ultimatum to surrender, disarm, and release the hostages still being held in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 attack, an event that marked the beginning of the Israeli war and massacres in Gaza.

In the event that this ultimatum is rejected, Smotrich proposes that Israel annex a portion of the territory each week, concluding the entire process within four weeks and establishing full Israeli control over Gaza.

It envisions that, initially, Palestinians would be asked to relocate to the southern Gaza Strip. Israel, meanwhile, would surround the northern and central parts of the territory to eliminate any remnants of Hamas militant structures, and then take the final steps of annexation.

"This is an objective that can be achieved within three to four months," the minister declared.

Smotrich's statements come at a time when the Israeli army is conducting a broad offensive with the aim of taking full control of Gaza City, the territory's largest urban area, despite heightened concerns about the situation of Palestinian civilians.

During the conflict, more than 2 million Gazans have been displaced at least once due to intense fighting. The Finance Minister called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to immediately approve his plan in its entirety.

Smotrich is one of the right-wing figures within Israel's ruling coalition who has spoken out in favor of returning Israeli settlements to the Gaza Strip, territory from which Israel withdrew in 2005, removing soldiers and settlers.

Last week, he authorized a major construction project in the West Bank, a project that, according to critics, poses a serious threat to the territorial integrity of a potential Palestinian state.
