Canada must impose a total ban on the sale-purchase of all weapons, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said. His government proposes a new law that would freeze private ownership of all short-term firearms.
The new legislation does not completely prohibit gun ownership, but would make it illegal to purchase them.
Trudeau's proposal comes days after a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Texas, united states, where 21 people were killed, 19 of them children.
The bill, which was introduced in Canada's parliament on Monday, makes it impossible to purchase, sell, transfer or import weapons nationwide.
"Apart from the use of firearms for sporting purposes and hunting, there is no reason for anyone in Canada to need weapons in his daily life," Trudeau told reporters.
"As we see that gun violence continues to increase, it is our duty to take action," he said.
This marks his government's most ambitious attempt to limit access to firearms.
The bill would also require rifle chargers to be reconfigured so they can hold no more than five rounds at the same time and strip firearms licenses of gun owners involved in domestic violence, or other criminal acts.
Unlike the US, gun possession is not sanctioned in Canada's Constitution, but firearms are still widespread, especially in rural parts of the country.
Canada has stricter gun ownership rules than its southern neighbor and records fewer firearm incidents each year. As an example, all weapons must be kept locked and fired, and anyone who wants to buy a firearm must undergo immediate checks.
But there have been calls in recent years to strengthen gun legislation there even further, especially after a number of deadly shootings.
In April 2020, an armed person posing as a police officer killed 22 people during the Nova Scotia shooting - the deadliest in Canada's history.
Within days, Teau announced an immediate ban on 1,500 different types of military and offensive-style weapons. The new bill would effectively limit the number of pistols legally owned in Canada to current levels.
