"Happiness and sadness" - Ukrainian sisters reunite after 20 years due

Tears of joy from meeting two young girls - one coming from a 34 hour journey from Ukraine and the other having just finished the night shift at work. They met after 20 years in Catalonia and the cause was the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, reports The Guardian.

"The moment was happy and sad," said Angelika Batiai, 24.

"I was looking at my sister again after 20 years, but on the other hand I left family and friends in a place at war."

The sisters spent the first years of life together in a village in southern Ukraine without their mother.

Family problems caused them to split; Angelika, 5, went to live with her aunt, and Tatyana, 6, with her grandmother, before ending up in an orphanage.

They prayed to grow up together, recalls Tatyana Kluge Garcia, now 25 years old.

"Because of the economy, it was impossible for my aunt to support us both," she said.

At the age of 8, Tatyana was adopted by a family in Girona, Spain. Despite living in a new family and in another country, the sister still remained in her mind.

"I always thought of going to Ukraine and finding it," says Tatyana. As a teenager, she started searching on social media to find traces of her sister, even downloading the Russian social network VK.

Dy mijë milje larg, në Ukrainë, Angelika po bënte të njëjtën gjë. Kur ajo po kërkonte në Facebook dhe pa një bionde me banim në Spanjë, ishte e sigurt se ajo ishte Tatyana.

Brenda pak javësh ato nisën të flisnin në mënyrë të vazhdueshme online, duke tejkaluar barrierat e gjuhës dhe kulturave. Ato bënë plane për t’u takuar në Spanjë, gjë e cila u pengua nga pandemia.

Hyrja e trupave ruse në Ukrainë, bëri që Tatyana të bënte një thirrje frenetike për Angelika që të largohej për në Spanjë. Ajo u zhvendos fillimisht bashke me të fejuarin në një vend strehim në Nova Odesa.

Por, çdo ditë motra e saj i kërkonte që të shkonte në Spanjë. Në fund, një mesazh nga nëna e Tatyana, bëri që Angelika të bindej. Tatyana tregon se i priti me ankth ditët dhe nuk arrinte ta besonte atë që po ndodhte.

One month after Angelika arrived in Spain, the sisters live in an apartment and communicate in sign language and with the help of Google Translate.

"Ever since we were little we dreamed of meeting again, but we never imagined that this would happen because of a war," says Tatyana.

For Angelika, meeting her sister was "extraordinary and incredible", but happiness still rivals the concern she has for her loved ones in Ukraine.

"I just can not stop thinking about them."
