Alexander Lukashenko has secured a seventh five-year term as president of Belarus in a landslide election victory that Western governments have dismissed as a farce.

Lukashenko won 86.8% of the vote in Sunday's election, according to results released by the country's election commission.

"You can congratulate the Republic of Belarus, we have elected a president," commission head Igor Karpenko said at a press conference in the early hours of Monday, according to Russian state media.

The US and EU said the elections could not be free and fair because independent media is banned in Belarus and all major opposition figures have been imprisoned or forced to flee the country.

The close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously defended his imprisonment of dissidents and declared: "I don't give a damn about the West."

Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat, on Saturday called the elections a "fraud" and said that "Lukashenko has no legitimacy."

The Election Commission said turnout was 85.7% in the election, in which 6.9 million people were eligible to vote. An earlier poll broadcast on state television predicted Lukashenko would receive 87.6% of the vote.

"The people of Belarus had no other choice. It is a bitter day for all those who long for freedom and democracy," said Annalena Baerbock, the German Foreign Minister.

Lukashenko – a 70-year-old former collective farm boss – suppressed mass protests against his rule in 2020 and allowed Moscow to use Belarusian territory to invade Ukraine in 2022. The opposition and the West said Lukashenko had rigged the last presidential vote and authorities had cracked down on demonstrations, with more than a thousand people still imprisoned.

All of Lukashenko's political opponents are either in prison or in exile along with tens of thousands of Belarusians who have fled since 2020.
