Witkoff and meet Putin in Moscow

US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Moscow on Thursday evening. Witkoff had said the day before that he, along with Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, would travel to the Russian capital at the request of Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks aimed at ending Russia's war in Ukraine.

They met with Putin and started the meeting in the Kremlin.

Meanwhile, earlier on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Donald Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. After the meeting, Zelensky declared that US security guarantees for Ukraine had been finalized, describing them as complete.

However, the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia remain one of the most problematic points of the negotiations. Zelensky told reporters in Davos that everything is related to the eastern part of the country. "Everything is related to the land," he said.

Witkoff is expected to present Putin with the latest version of a US-backed peace plan, details of which were first leaked to the media in November 2025. The initial 28-point plan was widely seen as favorable to Russia's interests in the war, and it was later reported that Kremlin officials had helped draft it, with Witkoff advising on how to present Trump's plan.

According to Russian state media, the meeting between Putin and Witkoff was also attended by Yuri Ushakov, Putin's top foreign policy adviser, and Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian negotiator. Both officials have previously been cited as figures who received advice from Witkoff to secure the US president's support.

Although the details of Trump's peace plan have not yet been made public, diplomatic sources say the document has undergone significant changes, following consultations with Ukrainian negotiators, as well as European and NATO allies.
