U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained a 5-year-old boy in Minnesota on his way home from school, transporting him and his father to a detention center in Texas, officials with the Columbia Heights School District in suburban Minneapolis said.

According to school officials, the child, identified as Liam Ramos, a kindergarten student, and his father were stopped Tuesday as they arrived at their apartment building. The school's principal, Zena Stenvik, said she was notified of the incident and immediately went to the scene.

When she arrived, her father's car was still running and they were both already under the agents' control. According to her, an agent took Liam out of the car, walked him to the door of the house and asked him to knock to see if anyone else was inside, an action that Stenvik described as "using a 5-year-old child as bait."

Another adult who was nearby had asked the agents to take Liam into custody to avoid arrest, but the request was denied. About 20 minutes later, Liam's older brother, a high school student, returned home to find the apartment empty, without his father and brother.

The family's attorney, Marc Prokosch, stated that the family has an active asylum case and that the father and son had entered the US through an official border crossing.

"They have followed all legal procedures. They did not enter illegally and they are not criminals," he said, adding that there is no deportation order against them.

On the other hand, the Department of Homeland Security responded by stating that the operation was aimed at arresting the father, whom it described as an illegal immigrant. According to DHS, the child was not the target of the operation and the agents stayed with him for security reasons, while the father allegedly tried to leave.

The incident has sparked strong reactions in the community and schools. Liam's teacher described him as a loving and energetic child who is missed by his classmates. According to school leaders, the detention of the children is creating fear and trauma among students and their families.

School officials have reported similar incidents in recent weeks, where children and teenagers have been detained by ICE, some on their way to school. They say the continued presence of agents near schools has shaken the community's sense of security.
