The world is on the brink of a third nuclear age, the head of the United Kingdom's Armed Forces, Tony Radakin, has warned.

"The world has changed. Global power is shifting and a third nuclear age is upon us. This third nuclear age, which is 'at dawn', comes from multiple dilemmas with widespread and destructive nuclear technologies, and the almost total lack of security architectures," the head of the British armed forces said, CNN writes.

According to him, Russia's war in Ukraine and the numerous conflicts in the Middle East have upended global stability, he said, among other things. The deployment of North Korean troops on Russia's border with Ukraine was the "most extraordinary development" of the year.

He said that recent developments such as the use of Iranian-supplied drones and Russia's threats to arm Yemen's Houthi rebels in retaliation for Western support for Ukraine are quite critical to the developments of the war, which is now taking on global proportions.

In November, Russia updated its nuclear doctrine, two days after US President Joe Biden gave Ukraine permission to strike targets inside Russia with American-made weapons.

Despite this, Radakin believes there is only a "remote chance" that Russia would attack or invade NATO, as she knows that "the response would be overwhelming, whether conventional or nuclear."

“NATO’s deterrence strategy is working,” the chief of the armed forces said. “But NATO must remain strong and be strengthened against a more dangerous Russia,” he said.
Global concerns are dividing the world into three groups, Radakin said. In one group are authoritarian states “seeking to challenge global rules,” including Russia, China, North Korea and Iran.

In the second are "responsible nations," mainly including democracies, but also Gulf monarchies and others that are "committed to partnership and to maintaining stability and security in the world," he continued.

The third group consists of countries that "stand between the two groups for maximum benefit," Radakin said.

NATO countries must maintain an advantage over their opponents in order to defeat them, he added.

In October, an Israeli attack on Iran destroyed Tehran's ability to produce ballistic missiles for a year and "destroyed almost all of Iran's air defense system. In this sense, Russia is showing us how not to fight. And Israel, in its response to Iran, has shown us the disproportionate advantage of modern ways of fighting," Radakin said.
