Dozens of people have been killed after an intense wave of Israeli airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of further escalation of operations against Hezbollah.

According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, at least 31 people have been killed in the latest bombings, including children, while dozens more have been injured.

The Israeli military said it struck more than 100 Hezbollah targets overnight, including weapons depots, command centers, observation posts and military infrastructure in southern Lebanon. It was one of the most intense nights of bombing since a US-brokered ceasefire took effect in mid-April.

Tensions rose further after the Israeli military reported that a rocket fired from Lebanon set off sirens in northern Israel. According to Israeli authorities, the rocket fell in an open area and caused no casualties.

Speaking at a security cabinet meeting, Netanyahu declared that Israel is "deepening its operation in Lebanon."

"The Israel Defense Forces are operating with large forces on the ground and occupying sovereign territory," he said, adding that the aim is to strengthen the "security zone" to protect communities in northern Israel from Hezbollah attacks.

The airstrikes hit various areas, including the village of Masghara in the Bekaa Valley and Burj al-Shamali in southern Lebanon. Local media also reported bombings near Beaufort Castle, a medieval fortress recognized by UNESCO as one of the best-preserved castles in the region.

Netanyahu's statements caused panic in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a traditional Hezbollah stronghold, where thousands of residents fled in vehicles for fear of new bombings.

Among the victims was the family of 7-year-old Mohammed, who survived after a rocket hit his home during the night.

"When I woke up, I felt like I couldn't move and there was only darkness around me," he said from the hospital, indicating that his father and two sisters lost their lives in the attack.
