Former Russian intelligence general: Syria was an unnecessary burden, but
Erdogan and Putin

"For Vladimir Putin, Syria is the symbol of his self-affirmation as a global leader. But for Russia, Syria is a useless burden that required a huge expenditure of military, political and economic forces, without giving anything in return."

This should have been just a whisper from close range to the Russian president. Then actual events imposed their verdict.

Former FSB general Yevgeny Savostyanov is considered one of the most sophisticated analysts of the state of his country.

Long ago, he was the man called upon by Boris Yeltsin to dismantle the old KGB in Moscow, and then a so-called prestigious technician involved in politics.

Because of his past, he was forgiven for his disobedience in 2015, when he left the Ministry of Culture, denouncing the climate of censorship, which according to him now prevailed for "any matter of public interest," as he wrote in his resignation letter.

In 2022, he promoted and signed a document against the war in Ukraine and then another against the use of the nuclear threat.

Today he lives abroad. "Of course I paid a tribute. I lost what I left in Moscow, I lost my status. But it doesn't matter. I remained a free man, whose actions do not contradict his beliefs."

Yevgeny Savostyanov's interview with Corriere della Sera:

What does Assad's fall mean for Putin?

"Above all, it is a colossal personal humiliation, inflicted first and foremost by Recep Erdogan, who had humiliated him on other occasions. Erdogan expelled him from the South Caucasus, closed the Bosphorus to him, made him wait at their meetings. The Turkish president is aware of how much Russia has been weakened by Putin's ambitious policy. It was already clear in 2014, at the time of the first conflict in Ukraine: when you start pursuing a revanchist policy, take into account that someone may take revenge on you. Bit by bit, Erdogan is regaining what Turkey lost in the 20th century."

What are the consequences for Moscow?

"At the military and political level, few. Our bases in Syria do not allow us to solve any important tasks, especially now that Turkey has closed the entrance of military ships to the Black Sea. The presence of Russian ships has always been only symbolic: it was clear to everyone that we could not oppose the NATO fleets in the Mediterranean. The only added value of allied Syria was its pro-Russian votes in the UN, which do not decide anything. And then, the possibility of providing weapons to our 'friends' in Lebanon, the West Bank and Iraq. Now, after the defeat of Hamas and Hezbollah by Israel, it is an operation that makes very little sense even in the logic of the Russian secret services."

Nëse do të mundej, Putini do ta kishte shpëtuar Assad-in.

“In the ranks of Assad’s victorious rebels there are quite a few people from the former USSR. People who could return home to the countries of Central Asia. A local destabilization, I’m thinking of Tajikistan or the eternally unresolved problem of the Caucasus, is possible. Recent events have shown that Russia could not do much today in the event of new outbreaks of revolt. This could prompt Putin to seek a way out of the war in Ukraine. But after what happened in Syria, its negotiating position has weakened. As the famous film said, an old lion is first of all old.”
